Reporting obligations

Too many small charities are 'unaware of their reporting obligations', Commission research finds

Less than half of small charities are able to provide adequate annual reports and accounts on request, according to research by the charity regulator.

And many large charities are still filing accounts with "major flaws".
The research reveals that many small charities do not appear aware of their reporting obligations. One in five sent another report in place on their annual report and accounts, one in six small charities failed to send over any form of report at all, and “several small charities” only sent their annual report and accounts after the Commission provided further explanation of the requirements to them.

Nigel Davies, head of accountancy services and the Commission said “the quality of small charity accounts is not as good as we would like”.

“All charities must by law prepare an annual report and accounts and make them publicly available. Accurate, good quality accounts is the minimum that we expect,” he said.

A chance to bag a place in a new Academy for social enterprises

WCVA, through its financing arm Social Investment Cymru has today announced a new partnership with Asda and Social Investment Scotland to bring the newly launched Asda Social Enterprise Supplier Development Academy to Wales.

This ground breaking opportunity will provide support for product-based social enterprises in Wales to apply for a place within a new Academy set up to increase the availability of products for ethically-minded consumers in Asda supermarkets.

The new Academy will support at least two Welsh social enterprises in this cohort to strengthen their understanding of supermarket retail and refine their commercial and marketing skills.

From 4 April until 22 April, any social enterprise in Wales that thinks it has a product that could be sold in Asda stores will be able to apply for a place within the Academy. Following a short listing process a number of social enterprises will be invited for interview by a panel in a Dragon’s Den style pitch format for the final places.

Successful Social Enterprises will receive:

  • Access to a range of specially developed training modules delivered over 3 days at Asda House in Leeds to include everything from understanding consumer purchasing to branding and packaging design

  • Support to pitch your product to Asda

  • Mentoring and insight from Asda experts and specialist support from Social Investment Cymru

  • A tailored grant to cover participation in the Academy

  • Access to bespoke investment to help develop and expand operations should Asda decide to list products within its stores

While there are no guarantees that Academy participants will receive a listing with Asda, the skills and support offered throughout the programme will significantly improve their prospects and, more importantly, provide them with all the skills necessary to access the large retail market.

The 2016 Powys Volunteer of the Year Awards is now open for nominations!

Do you know someone who gives the time willingly and goes above and beyond the call of duty?

2015 saw Shirley Hughes from Radnor Valley Little Dragons win the Trustee category:

Shirley has been volunteering at Radnor Valley Little Dragons for the last 10 years.  She has played an active role as a parent in organising and helping out with fundraising events, and supports the Playgroup in any way she can.  She volunteers on a daily basis.
Since 2009 she has served on the Committee as treasurer, secretary and Chair respectively.  Shirley has held the Chair position since 2012, during which time Shirley has been instrumental to the survival of the Play group, by almost single-handedly converting them to an all-day childcare setting, responding to the needs identified by the local community.  
She has raised thousands of pounds through successful grant applications for the group, and even dresses up as their mascot Dai the Dragon for their fundraising efforts.  She also organises the annual running of the Kington Community shop for a week each year, and this has raised £4500 over the past four years. Shirley manages to do this as well as having four children under 10!
Her nominator said:

“Shirley is a real inspiration and asset to the setting and it would not be where it is now without her.”

Company law

Register of people with significant control
From 6 April all companies, including charitable companies and community interest companies, must have a register of people with significant control (PSC register) of individuals and legal entities which have “significant influence or control” over them. There must be a register even if there are no PSCs, or even if the company is dormant. The rules are relatively straightforward for most of the companies on this mailing list, but may be complicated for some companies so read the information carefully.
